Messiah in the Old Testament

Theology Bites:

Jesus the Messiah (Yeshuah Hamashiach in Hebrew) is apparent from the beginning. The Messiah or Mashiach means “anointed One” translated into Greek as Christos, which is where we get the word, “Christ”. (ancienthebrew.org) John writes in John 1:1-3 in the New Testament scriptures:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word WAS with God, and the Word WAS God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.”

So, in Genesis 1:1 when all things were created, Jesus, the Son, as part of the triune Godhead was present.

“Then, God said, ‘Let us make man in OUR image, after OUR likeness’” (Genesis 1:26).

Note the key word, “our”. It is clear from just these passages that Jesus Christ (Yeshuah Hamashiach), as God, was the Creator of humankind. He was called the Word – the living, breathing Messiah and the living, breathing Scripture. Amen!
